Presenting the specialized Lockheed Martin C-130 Armpit Service Stand, a foundational access solution engineered for high-efficiency maintenance on the C-130 Hercules fleet. This strong platform is methodically designed to facilitate comprehensive servicing and inspection within the critical “armpit” zones—the complex areas adjacent to the main landing gear on both the left-hand (LH) and right-hand (RH) sides of the aircraft fuselage.
The primary function of this stand is to deliver safe, stable, and ergonomic access for technicians performing indispensable upkeep, repair, and inspection tasks on the C-130’s undercarriage systems. Its structure ensures maximum utility while respecting the aircraft’s critical surfaces, configured specifically to clear the wheel well flaps and the main landing gear cover panel.
This allows technicians unobstructed access to perform necessary “armpit services.” The large platform work area maximizes the efficiency of the maintenance team, reducing the need for constant repositioning. This ensures tools and personnel are accommodated securely.
Engineered for variable operational settings, the platform features an exceptional height adjustment capability, ranging from a low of 2.1 meters up to a maximum height of 3.0 meters. This large adjustment range ensures precise alignment with specific C-130 variants and required maintenance locations.
Height modulation is achieved smoothly and reliably via a dedicated hydraulic system utilizing a Hydraulic Double Acting Hand Pump, positioned conveniently at both the top and bottom of the platform. For increased operational flexibility, battery-powered hydraulic variants are also available.
Mobility and stability are paramount in the operational environment. The unit is mounted on large, heavy-duty 200mm diameter towable casters. To ensure directional control during movement, the casters opposite the tow point feature swivel/directionally locking capabilities. When deployed for use, a single lever action 4-point braking system provides swift and secure immobilization, securing technician safety. Further stability is provided by adjustable jacks and a dedicated jack lock-up point.
Lifting the towbar automatically engages the brakes, enhancing operational safety during relocation. For broader C-130 access solutions, consider the Lockheed Martin C-130 AF-BF Services Work Platform.
Access to the working deck is provided via a combination of a Bolt-on 45° Stair with removable handrails and vertical telescopic access points, ensuring quick and comfortable ascent. All access points are protected by self-closing Swing Gates with magnetic retainers, which are also removable for configuration flexibility. The platform’s entire perimeter, including all guardrails, incorporates telescopic/removable frames that slide down to midrail and toeboard height, further improving versatility for specific access needs. Spigot type handrails contribute to the overall structure’s integrity and modularity.
Safety features are integrated throughout the design to protect both personnel and the valuable aircraft asset. Foam rubber buffering is installed on all sides of the platform where contact with the aircraft is possible, preventing scratches or damage during positioning. Hi-vis reflective tape is applied to the platform circumference. Anti-skid nosing is utilized on the steps, increasing visibility in low-light conditions. The decking material consists of perforated and swaged aluminum with rubber matting over it. This arrangement offers superior grip and allows moisture to pass through flush perforations, maintaining a safe working surface even in inclement conditions.
For securing the unit or equipment, the stand features multiple labeled/rated tie-down points (Bolt-on). All components, including sliding handrails and removable elements, are retained with lanyards to prevent foreign object damage (FOD). The structure is durable and designed for logistical efficiency, capable of being stowed and deployed directly within a C-130 airframe.
With a sturdy Safe Working Load (SWL) capacity of 500kg, this C-130 Armpit Service Stand provides the specialized access and safety assurance required for complex aircraft maintenance tasks. Its dimensions are 3.38m in length, 1.79m in width, and 2.1 – 3.0m in height.
