Yakovlev Yak-40

The Yakovlev Yak-40, designated “Codling” by NATO, is a regional jet and VIP transport aircraft originating from the Soviet Union. Designed by the Yakovlev Design Bureau, the trijet was developed in the mid-1960s to serve as a small jetliner. Its maiden flight occurred on October 21, 1966, leading to a production run from 1967 to 1981, during which over 1,000 units were built. The Yak-40 was notable as the first Soviet-built airliner designed to meet Western airworthiness requirements.

The manufacturer, Yakovlev, is a foundational name in Soviet and Russian aviation history. It has been responsible for many influential aircraft designs, with the Yak-40 becoming a widely adopted aircraft within Aeroflot and for export starting in 1970.
