The Yakovlev Yak-55 is a high-performance, single-seat aerobatic aircraft designed for competition flying. Developed in the Soviet Union by the Yakovlev design bureau, it was specifically engineered to replace the Yak-50 as the premier aerobatic plane, capable of matching the demanding, low-speed maneuvers favored in international competition. The resulting design was a single-engined, all-metal cantilever monoplane.
Manufacturing history begins with the prototype’s first flight on May 28, 1981. The aircraft proved highly successful, with the Soviet aerobatic team using it to win the World Aerobatic Championship in 1984. A revised production version, the Yak-55M, featured a smaller wing to improve the roll rate. It flew first in May 1989 and entered production in 1990, with over 100 units built before production slowed in 1993.
The manufacturer, Yakovlev, founded by Alexander Sergeyevich Yakovlev, is one of the most foundational names in Russian aviation, known historically for its extensive line of piston-engine fighters and trainer aircraft, including a strong lineage of aerobatic models.
Maintenance requires reliable access for all key sections. Platforms and access solutions are available to address needs across the airframe, including the Nose Section (for windshield and cockpit access) and the Landing Gear (NLG and MLG). Comprehensive access equipment supports the Wing Box Area and various systems housed in the Aft Fuselage and Tail Section (Empennage), ensuring methodical inspection of components like the Vertical Stabiliser and Horizontal Stabiliser. These access systems also facilitate work on the Wing and Engine Pylon, including the engine body, cowl, and hydraulics.
