U-2 Dragon Lady

The U-2 Dragon Lady is an iconic high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft, foundational for intelligence gathering since the Cold War. Designed for surveillance at extreme altitudes, it can operate at over 70,000 feet, allowing it to collect critical imagery and signals intelligence. The aircraft is recognizable for its long, glider-like wings.

Its manufacturer, Lockheed Martin, has roots dating back to the 1912 establishment of the Loughead Aircraft Manufacturing Company. The U-2 was developed by the legendary Lockheed Skunk Works division under the leadership of Clarence “Kelly” Johnson in the mid-1950s. The aircraft’s initial secret development and rapid fielding were paramount to its early success. Although first flown in 1955, the U-2 remains active today, receiving modern updates from Lockheed Martin to ensure its continued operational relevance.

A variety of platforms and access solutions are utilized for maintenance and inspection of this aircraft.
