The SP-2H, originally designated P2V-7, is the final production variant of the Lockheed P-2 Neptune, a long-serving maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft. This version, known for its dual power system, combined two piston engines (Wright R-3350) with two auxiliary jet engines (Westinghouse J34-WE-36) for increased takeoff performance and speed. The P2V-7 introduced design enhancements, including a bulged cockpit canopy and improved wingtip tanks, while maintaining its capability for anti-submarine warfare. It was foundational to Cold War operations and saw significant service, including surveillance missions during the Vietnam War.
Lockheed Martin, a global aerospace and defense leader, traces its history to the early 20th century. The aircraft’s direct predecessor, the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation, developed the P-2 Neptune in the mid-1940s as a replacement for older patrol bombers. The P2V-7 entered service in the late 1950s, representing a peak of piston-engine anti-submarine technology before the introduction of purely turboprop designs like the P-3 Orion. The P-2 Neptune series, built by Lockheed, proved its reliability worldwide and continued flying with various operators into the 1980s.
