SNJ-5B

The North American SNJ-5B is a variant of the legendary SNJ/AT-6 advanced trainer, often called the “Pilot Maker” due to its foundational role in preparing nearly every WWII pilot for combat maneuvers. The SNJ-5, a two-seat aircraft, served primarily with the US Navy from the mid-1940s. It is part of the extensive family of trainers introduced in 1935, which also includes the Army’s AT-6 and the British Harvard.

Manufacturing history centers on North American Aviation, a foundational force in American aerospace. Founded in the late 1920s, the company was responsible for iconic designs like the T-6 series. Most of these trainers, including the SNJ and AT-6 models, were manufactured at North American Aviation’s Dallas, Texas, factory. This hard-wearing aircraft remains a symbol of wartime aviation training.

A range of platforms and access solutions are utilized to service this aircraft. These solutions—including various platforms and stands—support detailed maintenance access across the airframe. Maintenance requirements span the nose section (including the engine area), forward fuselage, main landing gear, wing box, and the tail section (empennage). For instance, access solutions support methodical inspection of the engine’s fan and turbine, the landing gear, and the cockpit windshield.
