The S-2B is an iconic, two-seat aerobatic biplane derived from the legendary Pitts Special, designed by Curtis Pitts starting in 1943. This high-performance aircraft features a sturdy design that allowed the Pitts biplanes to dominate world aerobatic competition throughout the 1960s and 1970s. The S-2 series, which introduced a two-seat configuration, first flew in 1967 and received type certification in 1971.
PITTS Aviation Enterprises was foundational to the manufacturing of these factory-built aircraft. The company and the Pitts Special design changed hands multiple times between 1977 and 1994, passing through entities including Doyle Child, Christen Industries, Steen Aero Lab, and ultimately Aviat Aircraft, which continues to support the design today. The S-2B specifically was built by Aerotek and features a powerful 260 hp Textron Lycoming engine, along with modifications to the wing and landing gear for enhanced performance.
