S-1S

The S-1S Special is an iconic single-seat aerobatic biplane, a pivotal design from PITTS Aviation Enterprises. Curtis Pitts developed the original Pitts Special design starting in 1944. The S-1S, which began factory production in 1972, quickly became renowned, dominating world aerobatic competitions in the early 1970s. The aircraft’s design, featuring four ailerons and symmetrical airfoils, provides the agility necessary for demanding maneuvers and established it as a benchmark for advanced aerobatic training.

PITTS Aviation Enterprises is tied directly to designer Curtis Pitts. The original S-1 design was first built in 1945. Following its early success as an amateur-built aircraft, the S-1S introduced factory-built precision, maintaining the design’s reputation for high performance. Production of factory-built S-1S aircraft continued until 1981, leaving a lasting legacy in sport aviation.
