S-1E

The S-1E is a variant of the foundational Pitts Special aerobatic biplane. The original Pitts S-1, a single-seat design, first flew in 1960. Designer Curtis Pitts began selling plans for the S-1 in the early 1960s, allowing for amateur construction.

The S-1E is a plans-built version of the aircraft, derived from the S-1C design, typically featuring four Frise ailerons and symmetrical airfoils for enhanced aerobatic performance. It is renowned in the competitive aerobatics world for its precision and immediate response to pilot input.

The manufacturing history of the Pitts Special saw several transitions. PITTS Aviation Enterprises was instrumental in the early days of providing the design. Curtis Pitts later sold the rights to Doyle Child, who subsequently sold them to Frank Christensen in 1981. Under Christen Industries, production continued in Afton, Wyoming. Currently, the type certificate and production rights are held by Aviat Aircraft.
