R22/R44

The R22/R44 represents two highly successful light utility helicopters produced by Robinson Helicopter Company, founded by Frank Robinson. The R22, a two-seat model, had its first flight in 1975 and received FAA certification in 1979. It became one of the world’s most widely used helicopters, popular for flight training, livestock mustering, and general personal use due to its low operating costs.

Following the success of the R22, the four-seat Robinson R44 was developed in the 1980s, featuring hydraulically assisted flight controls and a larger engine. The R44 first flew in 1990 and was introduced in 1993. Since 1999, the R44 has been the world’s best-selling general aviation helicopter.

Robinson Helicopter, based in Torrance, California, has focused on designing simple, reliable, and cost-effective helicopters. The R22 and R44 are commonly found globally, serving roles in private transportation, flight schools, law enforcement, utility work, and news gathering in countries across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Their widespread use is a testament to the manufacturer’s commitment to making helicopter ownership accessible.
