The MBB BK 117 B-1 is a twin-engine, multi-purpose helicopter known for its versatility and reliability in demanding roles such as emergency medical services, transport, and law enforcement. The B-1 variant, introduced in December 1987, featured Lycoming LTS 101-750B-1 engines for increased performance and a higher payload capacity. This aircraft has evolved since its introduction in the 1980s, becoming a leading model in medium helicopter aviation.
The BK 117 was the result of a foundational collaborative venture between Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm (MBB) of Germany and Kawasaki of Japan, beginning with an agreement in 1977 to develop a new general-purpose rotorcraft. MBB itself was established through a series of mergers, starting with Messerschmitt AG and Bölkow-Entwicklungen KG in 1968, followed by a merger with Blohm & Voss in 1969 to form Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm KG. MBB was later acquired by Daimler-Benz, eventually becoming part of Eurocopter, now Airbus Helicopters.
A range of platforms and access solutions are utilized to support thorough maintenance on the MBB BK 117 B-1. Equipment such as Reach Deck Platforms, Modular Stepover Platforms, Super Trestle Scaffold, and Super Service Stands provide crucial height access for work across all sections. These platforms facilitate detailed servicing for the Nose Section (including radome, antenna, and avionics) and the Forward Fuselage (Main Entry Door and Cabin Access). For the Wing & Engine Pylon area, these systems enable access to the engine inlet, fan, compressor, and turbine. They also support maintenance on the Landing Gear, Middle Fuselage, and all Tail Section components, ensuring all critical areas are reachable for servicing.
