L4B

The L4B Grasshopper is an iconic two-seat, high-wing monoplane recognized for its pivotal role as a liaison and observation aircraft during World War II. Derived from the highly successful Piper J-3 Cub, the L4B variant was militarized with the addition of a radio, military paint, and markings, making it essential for reconnaissance and artillery spotting on every front where the Army operated. It featured a simple, light liaison type design with a 65 horsepower engine.

The L4B’s manufacturer, PIPER Aircraft Corporation, was formally established by William T. Piper in 1937, with the foundational success of the Piper Cub launching the company. Piper quickly built an indispensable reputation for producing affordable, reliable, and versatile aircraft. Throughout its history, the company has continued to deliver pivotal aircraft, including the PA-23 Apache and the PA-46 Malibu, maintaining its legacy as a foundational name in American general and military aviation.
