KC-10A Extender

The KC-10A Extender is a versatile tanker/transport aircraft, foundational for the United States Air Force’s global reach. It is derived from the commercial DC-10-30CF passenger/cargo variant, designed to provide aerial refueling and transport capability. The KC-10 is distinguished by its ability to use both the flying-boom and hose-and-drogue systems, allowing it to refuel a broad range of U.S. and allied aircraft. The first KC-10 Extender flew in July 1980, and a total of 60 were built for the USAF.

McDonnell Douglas, the manufacturer, was a major American aerospace corporation formed in 1967 by the merger of McDonnell Aircraft and Douglas Aircraft Company. The company built a legacy of foundational military and commercial aircraft, including the F-4 Phantom II and the DC-10, the latter of which served as the basis for the KC-10 Extender. Production of the KC-10A variant occurred between 1979 and 1987. The company was later acquired by Boeing in 1997.

A range of platforms and access solutions are utilized for meticulous maintenance on this aircraft. For servicing the Nose Section (Windshield & Cockpit, Avionics), Forward Fuselage (Cabin Access, Cargo/Baggage), Landing Gear, and General Access, platforms are indispensable. Specialized solutions like a cantilever platform support work on the Wing & Engine Pylon, addressing needs for the Engine Body, Fan, and Compressor. Modular stepover platforms provide access over structural elements like the Wing Box in the Middle Fuselage area and to the AFT Fuselage for Auxiliary Fuel and APU compartments in the Tail Section.
