JAS 39 Gripen C/D

The JAS 39 Gripen C/D is a modern multirole fighter aircraft manufactured by Saab. The designation JAS stands for Jakt, Attack och Spaning (hunting, attack, and reconnaissance), reflecting its core capabilities. The Gripen C/D variant has been in service with the Swedish Air Force since 2005.

Saab began developing the JAS 39 in 1979 when the Swedish government sought a replacement for the Saab 35 Draken and 37 Viggen. The company officially started the manufacturing program in 1987. The first flight of the Saab 39 took place in December 1988. The name “Gripen” (griffin) was chosen via a public competition and references the heraldry on the Saab logo. Saab is a Swedish aerospace and defense company, foundational to the nation’s aviation history.

A variety of platforms and access solutions are utilized to service this high-performance aircraft. Maintenance requirements for the Nose Section (including avionics and cockpit access), Landing Gear, and the Wing & Engine Pylon areas benefit from specialized stands and platforms. These items facilitate thorough access to critical components like the engine inlet, turbine, and fan, as well as necessary maintenance for the fuselage sections, including the AFT Fuselage and Tail Section (empennage).
