Heron

The Heron is a highly capable Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) manufactured by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). It emerged from a market study in the 1990s indicating a demand for a UAS with exceptional endurance, leading to its first flight in 1994 and introduction around 2005. The Heron is recognized for its operational capabilities, demonstrated by continuous flights of up to 52 hours. It remains an active system in production and is used by various global forces for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions, operating autonomously for taxiing, takeoff, and landing.

IAI, the manufacturer, is Israel’s paramount aerospace and defense company. It developed the Heron’s redundant avionics, initially based on the IAI/TRW RQ-5 Hunter UAS.

A diverse range of platforms and access solutions facilitates methodical maintenance for the Heron. These products support detailed access to critical areas, including the Nose Section (Radome, Antenna, Nose Avionics, Bulkhead); Landing Gear (NLG and MLG); and the Wing & Engine Pylon (Engine Inlet/Exhaust, Engine Body, Anti-Ice, Hydraulics). Other access needs addressed include the Forward Fuselage, Middle Fuselage/Wing Box Area, AFT Fuselage, and Tail Section (Empennage).
