The GY80-180 is a variant of the Gardan GY-80 Horizon, a light aircraft that entered the general aviation market in the early 1960s. Designed by Yves Gardan, the first prototype of the GY-80 flew in July 1960. The GY-80 series was a popular four-seat, single-engine aircraft known for its retractable landing gear and capable performance.
The manufacturer, SUD – AVIATION S N C A, was a French state-owned aerospace company founded on March 1, 1957, through the merger of SNCASO and SNCASE. While recognized for major commercial achievements like the Caravelle jetliner, Sud Aviation also ventured into light aircraft production with the GY-80. The company was defunct in 1970 when it merged with other French aerospace entities to form Aérospatiale. Approximately 267 units of the GY-80 type were eventually built.
For maintaining the GY80-180, a selection of platforms and access solutions are utilized. Reach Deck Platforms and Modular Stepover Platforms provide precise access for the Wing & Engine Pylon section, specifically for work on the engine, anti-ice systems, and hydraulics. For the Tail Section (Empennage), access structures such as the Ultraraise and Easyraise facilitate maintenance on the vertical and horizontal stabilizers. The Super Maintenance Platform and Super Trestle Scaffold offer broader access for the Forward Fuselage, supporting tasks related to cabin access, lighting systems, and wheel well access. Platform Ladder Warthog and A-Frame platforms ensure foundational, leading access to the Nose Section for avionics and cockpit maintenance.
