F/A-18D Hornet

The F/A-18D Hornet is a twin-engine, supersonic multirole aircraft developed from the earlier F/A-18A/B models. Conceived in the late 1970s and entering service in the 1980s, it was designed to combine fighter agility with attack versatility. The “D” variant added advanced avionics, a two-seat configuration for training or mission systems operation, and enhanced night-attack capability. Boeing, which absorbed McDonnell Douglas in 1997, continues to support and refine the platform through upgrades and sustainment programs.

Various platform and access solutions are commonly used around this aircraft to support inspection and servicing tasks:

Nose Section
Platforms such as reach decks, trestle-type stands, adjustable lifts, and fibreglass platforms assist with radome access, antenna checks, avionics bays, windshield and cockpit entry, and forward bulkhead inspection.

Forward Fuselage
Modular stepover platforms, service stands, and platform ladders allow reach to entry points, lighting components, ECS zones, and wheel-well areas.

Landing Gear (NLG + MLG)
Trestle scaffolds, compact lifting platforms, and A-frame platforms support work around both nose and main gear, including strut inspection and wheel-well tasks.

Middle Fuselage / Wing Box Area
Bridge decks, adjustable platforms, and stepovers facilitate access to wing-box panels, fuel tank zones, oil-service points, and interior inspection points.

Wing & Engine Pylon
Cantilever platforms, maintenance stands, and height-adjustable lifts are commonly applied for pylon hardware, anti-ice lines, inlet and exhaust work, engine components, hydraulics, fuel-pump zones, undercowl areas, and armpit regions.

AFT Fuselage
Platforms and lift systems enable safe reach to AFT bulkheads, ducting, avionics, auxiliary fuel areas, compartments, and rear structures.

Tail Section (Empennage)
High-reach platforms and trestle configurations support APU intake/exhaust areas, tail surfaces, and control surfaces such as the rudder and stabilisers.

General Access
Multi-purpose platforms and adjustable stands assist with tasks spanning forward-to-aft zones across the aircraft.
