F/A-18B Hornet

The F/A-18B Hornet is a two-seat, carrier-capable multi-role fighter. Part of the original Legacy Hornet family (A/B/C/D), the B variant is primarily used for training and maintaining combat readiness due to its dual cockpit configuration. It is celebrated for its versatility, advanced avionics, and excellent maneuverability, making it indispensable for both fighter and attack missions.

The manufacturing history of the Hornet involves multiple major aerospace companies. While the program was initiated by McDonnell Douglas and Northrop, the aircraft’s production life eventually came under the purview of Boeing. Boeing acquired McDonnell Douglas in 1997 and continued to manufacture the original Hornet series until 2000. Boeing developed the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, an evolutionary design that succeeded the Legacy Hornet.

Maintaining the F/A-18B requires targeted access to its many critical systems. Platforms and access solutions are necessary for detailed maintenance across the airframe. The Reach Deck Platform and Modular Stepover Platforms facilitate safe access to the Nose Section components, including the radome and avionics. For the large structures, like the Middle Fuselage/Wing Box Area, equipment such as the Super Trestle Scaffold and Cantilever Platform provides sturdy access for maintenance on fuel tanks and oil systems. For the Wing & Engine Pylon section—covering elements like the engine inlet, exhaust, and hydraulics—the Super Service Stand and Super Maintenance Platform offer ideal height and stability. Specialized tools, including the Aviation Chock and Cone Trolley, are foundational for ensuring safe ground handling during these methodical inspections and repairs.
