The F-16V (Block 70/72) is the most advanced fourth-generation fighter jet currently produced by Lockheed Martin. This multirole fighter traces its origin to General Dynamics, which developed the aircraft in 1974. Following corporate changes, Lockheed Corporation took over production from 1993 to 1995, after which Lockheed Martin became the manufacturer, continuing the Fighting Falcon’s legacy from 1995 to the present. Over 4,700 F-16s have been procured by 30 customers globally. New production Block 70/72 aircraft and upgrade packages ensure the international F-16 fleet remains operational well into 2060.
The Block 70/72 configuration introduces foundational upgrades, including the advanced APG-83 Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, upgraded Modular Mission Computer, and new cockpit displays. Innovative features include Infrared Search and Track (IRST) capability and a new Digital Flight Control Computer. These systems enhance the aircraft’s situational awareness and lethality, ensuring its role as a paramount air superiority and multirole fighter.
Maintenance access for this aircraft requires specialized equipment tailored to various sections, including the Nose Section (Radome, Antenna, Windshield & Cockpit), Landing Gear, and the Wing & Engine Pylon areas (Engine inlet/exhaust, Fan, Turbine, Hydraulics). A variety of platforms and access solutions are utilized to support thorough inspection and repair across the aircraft’s body, including the Forward Fuselage, Middle Fuselage, AFT Fuselage, and Tail Section (Vertical Stabiliser, Horizontal Stabiliser, Rudder). Examples of access equipment used include Reach Deck Platforms, Modular Stepover Platforms, Super Trestle Scaffold, and Cantilever Platforms.
