Diamond Aircraft Industries began its history in 1981 in Friesach, Austria, under the name Hoffmann Flugzeugbau. The DV20/DA20 Katana, which first flew in 1991, was a foundational aircraft, developed from the earlier Diamond HK36 Super Dimona motor glider. Production of the Katana began in 1994, with manufacturing expanding to a new facility in Canada to meet North American market demand.
