The DHC-1A-1 is a variant of the de Havilland Canada DHC-1 Chipmunk, a tandem, two-seat, single-engined primary trainer aircraft. The DHC-1 Chipmunk was de Havilland Canada’s first postwar aviation project, designed to replace the earlier Tiger Moth trainer. The prototype first flew on May 22, 1946.
De Havilland Canada manufactured the Chipmunk between 1947 and 1956. The aircraft was widely adopted as a foundational trainer by the Royal Air Force, Royal Canadian Air Force, and Portuguese Air Force. Production totaled 1,284 units across Canada, Britain, and Portugal. The DHC-1A-1 is specifically a Canadian-built variant.
