The DH82A TIGER MOTH is renowned as possibly the best-known training airplane ever produced. This open-cockpit, tandem two-seat biplane first flew in October 1931 and was introduced into service in February 1932. It was developed from the de Havilland DH.60 Moth and cemented its legacy as the primary basic trainer for numerous air forces, including the RAF Central Flying School. The DH.82A variant, also known as the Tiger Moth II, was powered by a 130 hp de Havilland Gipsy Major I engine. Production ran from 1931 to 1944.
The DH82A’s manufacturer, De Havilland Aircraft Company Limited, was founded in 1920 by Geoffrey de Havilland. The company established itself as a leading aerospace firm in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, England. De Havilland pioneered a successful series of light touring and training aircraft throughout the 1930s, including the Tiger Moth, which followed the foundational DH. 60 Moth. The company later focused on high-performance aircraft and ultimately became incorporated into Hawker Siddeley in 1963.
