The DH-82 Tiger Moth is an iconic single-engine biplane, taildragger aircraft, primarily developed as a foundational trainer for military and civilian pilots. Designed with two seats in a tandem configuration, it was crucial for the Royal Air Force, serving as the predominant primary trainer leading up to and throughout WWII, providing countless pilots with their initial solo flight experience.
The manufacturer, DE Havilland, played a key role in aviation history. Founded by Geoffrey de Havilland, the company developed the DH-82 from the earlier DH.60 Moth. The Tiger Moth first flew on October 26, 1931, and entered service in February 1932. Manufacturing spanned from 1931 to 1944, resulting in 8,868 units built. While officially retired from military use in 1959, the aircraft remains in service today for civil use, cementing its legacy.
Maintaining this aircraft, including the Nose Section (Windshield & Cockpit, Bulkhead), Wing & Engine Pylon (Engine Inlet/Exhaust, Engine Body), and Tail Section (Vertical Stabiliser, Horizontal Stabiliser, Rudder), requires specialized access equipment. Platforms and stands, such as Reach Deck Platforms and Modular Stepover Platforms, support detailed and methodological inspections across these key aircraft areas. Other access solutions, including Trestle Scaffolds and Cantilever Platforms, are utilized for comprehensive service work, ensuring maintenance is efficient and first-class across the DH-82.
