The DA 20-A1 Katana is a two-seat general aviation light aircraft, foundational to modern flight training and personal use. This Canadian-built variant, powered by an 80 hp Rotax 912 engine, was introduced in 1994 and quickly gained popularity in the North American market. Revolutionary for its time, the airframe is constructed almost entirely from composite materials, specifically glass and carbon-fiber reinforced plastic, ensuring a remarkably lightweight design.
Diamond Aircraft Industries, the manufacturer, originated in Austria. The company was founded by Wolf Hoffmann in 1981 as Hoffmann Flugzeugbau. Following several name changes, it became Dimona Aircraft before establishing its current identity. The company developed the DA20/DV20 Katana from the earlier Diamond HK36 Super Dimona motorglider, with its first flight in 1991. Production expanded into Canada during the 1990s to meet global demand, resulting in over 1,000 DA-20 Katanas built and remaining in active production since 1994.
For maintaining the DA 20-A1 KATANA, a variety of platforms and access solutions are available. These tools allow for meticulous service access across the aircraft, including the Nose Section (radome, antenna, avionics, and cockpit), the Forward Fuselage (cabin access and forward wheel well), and the Landing Gear. Specialized stands facilitate detailed work on the Middle Fuselage, Wing Area, and Tail Section (empennage), ensuring comprehensive maintenance coverage for all flight-critical components.
