D17-S

The Beechcraft D17-S is a notable variant of the classic Model 17 “Staggerwing” biplane. Manufactured by Beechcraft, a company known for custom-built, high-quality aircraft, the first Model 17 flew in 1932. The D17-S variant, introduced in the mid-1930s, became the most produced version. Initially popular in the civilian market for transport and air racing due to its speed, the D17-S played a foundational role during World War II, serving Allied forces primarily as a transport aircraft (designated UC-43 by the USAAF and GB-2 by the US Navy). Production continued until 1949, with 785 total Model 17s produced.

Maintaining the D17-S requires reliable access to various sections. Platforms and access solutions are utilized for thorough upkeep on these classic aircraft. For the Wing & Engine Pylon area, equipment such as Cantilever Platforms or Super Maintenance Platforms allows technicians detailed access to the engine components, including the fan, compressor, and turbine, as well as fuel tanks and hydraulics.

For the Tail Section, including the vertical and horizontal stabilizers and rudder, specialized platforms like the Bridge Deck or Platform Ladder Warthog ensure technicians can work methodically. Simple access devices, like the Reach Deck Platform, address general access needs across the forward fuselage, ensuring clear lines of sight for interior cabin maintenance and system checks on areas like the Environmental Control System. Sturdy Super Trestle Scaffold units also enable first-class access to challenging areas like the Middle Fuselage and Wing Box for fuel and oil maintenance. Aviation Chock and Cone Trolleys assist with safe maneuvering and securing the aircraft.
