The Cessna Caravan is a foundational, single-engine utility turboprop aircraft renowned globally for its versatility in cargo, passenger, and specialized operations. Designed for reliable performance even from short, unprepared airstrips, the Caravan series is highly adaptable. The primary production model, the 208 Caravan, was officially certified by the FAA in 1984, following its first flight in December 1982. It has since spawned variants like the longer 208B Grand Caravan, cementing its reputation as a dependable workhorse.
The manufacturer, Cessna, has a rich history in aviation, tracing its roots to Clyde Cessna, who built and flew his own aircraft in 1911. The company, originally established in 1927 as the Cessna-Roos Aircraft Company, quickly became known for producing small, high-wing piston aircraft. During the post-World War II era, Cessna was among the “Big Three” in general aviation manufacturing. Its legendary aircraft include the Cessna 172, the most-produced airplane in history, and the Citation family of business jets. Cessna ceased to be an independent company in 1985 but remains a strong brand within Textron Aviation today.
