The C-5 Galaxy, and its modernized version, the C-5M Super Galaxy, is the largest strategic transport aircraft in the Air Force inventory. Its primary mission is the rapid, long-range transport of cargo and personnel for the Department of Defense. The C-5M is a modernized iteration of the foundational C-5, designed and manufactured by Lockheed Martin-Georgia Co.
Lockheed Martin’s history with this aircraft began with the C-5 Galaxy’s development in the 1960s. The first C-5A variant was delivered to the U.S. Air Force in December 1969, following its first flight in June 1968. The initial C-5A production ran from 1968 to 1973. A later, improved variant, the C-5B, which featured updated wings, simplified landing gear, and upgraded engines, was delivered from 1986 to 1989. The C-5M Super Galaxy modernization effort incorporated a wide range of system improvements, including new F-138-GE100 engines.
Access platforms and solutions are critical for maintaining this aircraft. Reach Deck Platform, Modular Stepover Platforms, Super Trestle Scaffold, Ultraraise, Super Service Stand, Easyraise, Bridge Deck, and Cantilever Platform are used for essential maintenance across numerous aircraft sections. These solutions address access needs for the Nose Section (Windshield & Cockpit, Radome), Forward Fuselage (Cargo/Baggage, Forward Wheel Well Access), Landing Gear (Nose Landing Gear and Main Landing Gear), Middle Fuselage (Wing Box, Fuel Tanks, Oil Maintenance), Wing & Engine Pylon (Engine Inlet/Exhaust, Undercowl, Engine Flap), AFT Fuselage (APU Compartments, AFT Cargo), and the Tail Section (Vertical and Horizontal Stabiliser, Rudder). Aviation Chock and Cone Trolley, Super Maintenance Platform, Branach Fibreglass Platform, A Frame Aviation Platform, and Platform Ladder Warthog offer diverse access for these areas, ensuring thorough and methodical maintenance tasks can be completed across all general access points.
