C-27J

The C-27J Spartan is a robust and versatile military transport aircraft, originally developed and manufactured by Leonardo’s Aircraft Division (formerly Alenia Aermacchi). Its design is an advanced derivative of the Aeritalia G.222, featuring the same powerful Rolls-Royce AE2100-D2A engines and advanced avionics as the larger Lockheed Martin C-130J Hercules.

The C-27J first flew in 1999 and entered service in 2006. It is highly regarded for its short takeoff and landing (STOL) capabilities, allowing it to operate from unprepared or semi-prepared runways and in challenging environments. The aircraft is designed for tactical airlift, troop transport, cargo delivery, medical evacuation, and humanitarian missions.

The manufacturer, Leonardo (formerly designed by Alenia Aermacchi), played a role in the C-27J program, notably through an international teaming arrangement under which L-3 Communications (now part of Leonardo DRS) served as the prime contractor for the U.S. military’s Joint Cargo Aircraft (JCA) selection of the C-27J in 2007.

The C-27J is currently in service with numerous air forces and military branches worldwide, underscoring its global utility. Primary users include the Italian Air Force, the Royal Australian Air Force, and the United States Coast Guard (where it is designated HC-27J for search and rescue missions). The aircraft is frequently deployed across Europe, North America, and Australia, providing essential tactical air support and logistical capabilities in diverse operational theaters.
