The AT-16 Harvard IIB is a Canadian-built variant of the legendary North American AT-6/Harvard advanced trainer aircraft. The AT-16 designation was used for aircraft built by Noorduyn Aviation in Montreal under a license agreement, primarily to support the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan during World War II. These aircraft were foundational to preparing thousands of pilots for combat, earning a reputation for being challenging yet capable trainers. The AT-16 was typically powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-1340 Wasp radial engine.
Noorduyn Aviation was established in Canada in 1935 by Robert B.C. Noorduyn. While the company is perhaps best known for its bush plane, the Norseman, its manufacturing capacity was critical during the war. Noorduyn manufactured a substantial number of AT-16s for the Canadian and British air forces, contributing significantly to the Allied war effort. After the war, many of these aircraft continued service globally or transitioned to civilian hands.
For the maintenance of the AT-16, a variety of access platforms are utilized. Access to the nose section for inspection of the engine and avionics is aided by various platforms. For the wings and tail section, platforms like the Cantilever Platform and the Super Maintenance Platform are indispensable for ensuring detailed inspection and repair of surfaces and control mechanisms. Modular Stepover Platforms provide excellent accessibility for the fuselage and wing box area, including fuel tanks and landing gear components. These access solutions are essential for thorough, methodical maintenance on this classic airframe.
