The Luscombe 8E is part of the influential Luscombe 8 series, a high-wing, side-by-side-seating monoplane with conventional landing gear. Designed by Donald Luscombe, the Model 8 first flew in 1937 and quickly became the company’s most famous product. It was developed to utilize the new small, horizontally-opposed engines available at the time. The 8E variant was a popular post-war model.
Luscombe Aircraft Corporation was founded in Kansas City, Missouri, with the goal of producing all-metal aircraft. After early attempts like the Phantom, the company was re-formed in New Jersey in 1937 to focus on the Model 8. Production by Luscombe Aircraft continued until the company ceased operations in 1949, though subsequent companies continued to build the Model 8 until 1960, resulting in over 5,800 units produced.
