The Fokker 70 and Fokker 100 are narrow-body, twin-engined, medium-range, turbofan regional airliners developed and produced by the now-defunct Dutch aircraft manufacturer Fokker.
Fokker, officially known as Fokker Aeroplan-bau, was a pioneering aviation company established by Anthony Fokker in 1912. It played a significant role in aviation history, particularly with its involvement in WWI aircraft and later with successful commercial airliners like the F28 Fellowship, which preceded the 70 and 100 series. The company declared bankruptcy in 1996, shortly after production of these jets ended.
The Fokker 100 was launched in 1983 as a replacement for the F28 Fellowship, with its maiden flight occurring in November 1986. It seats up to 107 passengers. Following its approval in 1987, deliveries began in 1988, with major initial orders from American Airlines, TAM Transportes Aéreos Regionais, and USAir.
The Fokker 70 is a shortened variant of the Fokker 100, designed for shorter routes and seating up to 85 passengers. Its development began in the early 1990s, and it first flew in April 1993, with commercial introduction starting in 1995.
Both aircraft saw extensive use worldwide, particularly by regional and mainline carriers looking for efficient jetliners for short to medium-haul routes. While production ceased in 1997, the aircraft models have historically been widely used in Europe (e.g., KLM Cityhopper, Swissair), the Americas (e.g., American Airlines, USAir, TAM), and Australia/Oceania (e.g., QantasLink). Today, some are still operated by various regional airlines globally.
