The 601 is a twin-engine, pressurized light aircraft developed by TED SMITH Aerostar. Introduced a year after the initial Model 600, the 601 variant is distinguished by its installation of twin Rajay turbochargers, enabling its Lycoming IO-540-S1A5 engines to maintain high performance up to 16,000 feet. The aircraft is known for its speed and sleek design, which reflects Ted Smith’s foundational work on high-performance piston twins.
The manufacturing history of the Aerostar line is marked by transitions. Designer Ted Smith began the project in the 1960s, producing the aircraft through his own companies. Following subsequent sales, the line was later acquired by Piper Aircraft, which continued production and development of the fast, high-flying series.
The maintenance requirements of the 601 demand specialized access. For the Nose Section and Forward Fuselage, platforms are available to provide access to the radome, avionics, windshield, cockpit, and forward wheel well. For the Landing Gear, stands support inspection and service of the main and nose landing gear components.
Accessing the Middle Fuselage and Wing Box Area, including fuel tanks and cabin interior points, is achieved with modular platforms.
