The 500-S, often known as the Shrike Commander, is part of the Twin Commander family of aircraft, a series renowned for its dependable twin-engine performance. The aircraft’s high-wing cantilever monoplane design and spacious cabin made it a preferred choice for business and private transport. The 500-S gained international recognition through legendary air show performer Bob Hoover, who demonstrated its simplicity and durability with his signature engine-off aerobatic routine.

Manufacturing of this lineage was overseen by Rockwell International, a major American conglomerate formed from the merger of Rockwell-Standard and North American Aviation in 1967. Rockwell International absorbed the Aero Commander line, continuing to refine and produce variants like the 500-S, contributing significantly to both commercial and military aviation.
