305A

The Cessna 305A, better known by its official military designation, the L-19 Bird Dog, is a renowned single-engine liaison and observation aircraft. Developed in the late 1940s, the 305A was a military adaptation of the popular Cessna 170 civil aircraft. It was the first all-metal fixed-wing aircraft purchased by the U.S. Army after World War II. The design is characterized by its high wing and large windows, providing pilots with exceptional visibility crucial for reconnaissance, marking targets, and transporting personnel.

The manufacturer, Cessna, has a foundational history in aviation, originating in 1927 in Wichita, Kansas, under founder Clyde Cessna. The company became a paramount name in general aviation, known for its strong and reliable aircraft like the 172 and 182. The production of the 305A helped cement Cessna’s role as a leading supplier of utility aircraft for military and civilian use worldwide.
