24R-9(W)

The Fairchild 24R-9(W) is part of the distinguished Fairchild Model 24 series, a successful line of civil and military utility aircraft. The “24” line was an evolution of earlier Fairchild designs, becoming notable for its reliability and use as a four-seat monoplane. The R-9(W) designation likely points to a specific configuration within the Model 24 family, featuring a Ranger engine, distinguishing it from other variants like the military C-61 or Argus.

Fairchild Aircraft, the manufacturer, was founded in 1925 by Sherman Fairchild. Based at various times in New York, Maryland, and Texas, the company played a foundational role in American aviation history. Fairchild is credited with manufacturing the first U.S. aircraft to include a fully enclosed cockpit and hydraulic landing gear, establishing an early reputation for innovation. The Model 24 first flew in 1932, with production continuing into the late 1940s, resulting in over 2,230 units built, including large numbers for military use, such as the Argus for the Royal Air Force. The company’s legacy persisted until its acquisition by M7 Aerospace in 2003.
