McDonnell Douglas Corporation was a major U.S. aerospace and defense company formed in 1967 from the merger of McDonnell Aircraft Corporation (founded 1939) and Douglas Aircraft Company (established 1921). It was a prominent producer of jet fighters, commercial aircraft, and space vehicles until its merger with Boeing in 1997.
As a merged entity, the company is not currently producing new products, but its designs continue under Boeing.
Historically significant products include a range of military aircraft such as the F-15 Eagle, F/A-18 Hornet (initial design), C-17 Globemaster III (initial design), and the KC-10 Extender tanker. Its well-known commercial airliners developed during its run were the DC-10, MD-80 series, MD-11, and the MD-90. The final evolution of the DC-9 was sold as the Boeing 717. The company’s heritage also includes pre-merger aircraft like the DC-3, DC-8, and DC-9.
