T-28B

The T-28B Trojan is a foundational military trainer aircraft developed and manufactured by North American Aviation. Introduced for service starting in 1950, the T-28 series was designed to replace the aging T-6 Texan. The B model, specifically delivered to the U.S. Navy (489 units built), featured a more powerful Wright Cyclone R-1820 radial engine, generating 1,425 hp, and was adapted for carrier operations with an arresting hook.

North American Aviation has a long history in aerospace, producing aircraft from 1949 through 1963 in locations including Inglewood and Downey, California. While initially serving as a primary trainer, later versions of the T-28 were modified for counter-insurgency operations during the Vietnam War, demonstrating the aircraft’s versatility. The T-28 proved sturdy and reliable, maintaining service with the U.S. Navy until the 1980s. A total of approximately 1,948 Trojans were built across all variants, with many continuing today in civilian use as popular warbirds.
