ST-A

The RYAN ST-A is a light, two-seat monoplane renowned for its sleek design and advanced metal construction for the era. Introduced in the 1930s, the “ST” stood for Sport Trainer, reflecting its primary roles in civilian training and sport flying. Its low-wing configuration and superior handling made it a popular choice for flight schools and private owners, and it served as the basis for military trainer variants, including the PT-16 used by the US military.

RYAN Aeronautical, the manufacturer, was founded by T. Claude Ryan in 1934 in San Diego, California. The company traces its origins back to 1925 when Ryan started the Ryan Flying Company, which famously produced the “Spirit of St. Louis” for Charles Lindbergh’s transatlantic flight. RYAN Aeronautical established itself as a foundational builder of high-quality aircraft, training planes, and eventually advanced jet propulsion and drone technology, securing its place in aviation history before being acquired by Teledyne in 1969.
