The ScanEagle is a long-endurance unmanned aerial system (UAS) renowned for delivering persistent intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance imagery over land or sea. Developed by Insitu, a wholly owned subsidiary of Boeing, the ScanEagle originated from the Insitu SeaScan platform. Its first flight was on June 20, 2002, and it was introduced for military service, notably with the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, starting in 2005. It features autonomous launching via a catapult and is retrieved using a patented SkyHook recovery system, allowing it to operate without a runway.
Boeing, one of the world’s largest aerospace companies, manufactures the ScanEagle through its subsidiary Insitu. Boeing’s history in aviation manufacturing dates back over a century, specializing in commercial jetliners and military defense, space, and security systems. The ScanEagle is currently in production and is deployed by over 20 countries worldwide.
