The Bell OH-58C Kiowa is a crucial light observation helicopter developed from the Bell 206 platform. Bell Helicopter, the manufacturer, began its history in the 1930s as a pioneer in rotary-wing design, ultimately becoming a foundational United States aerospace company known for innovative and reliable aircraft. The OH-58 series originated in the early 1960s as the D-250 for the Light Observation Helicopter (LOH) program. The OH-58C variant was designed to address power limitations in earlier Kiowa models by incorporating a more powerful engine. This model featured a flat windscreen and unique IR exhaust suppressors. The OH-58 series saw active combat service from its deployment in the Vietnam War through later conflicts like the Gulf War and the War in Afghanistan. Production of the OH-58 airframes occurred between 1966 and 1989, with the C variant remaining in service with the U.S. Army as a trainer until its retirement in September 2020. Over 2,300 OH-58s were produced across all variants.
Specialized access equipment is essential for thorough and methodical maintenance of the OH-58C. Various platforms and stands are used to reach critical areas like the Nose Section (Windshield & Cockpit, Avionics), the Main and Nose Landing Gear, and the AFT Fuselage (Rear Avionics, Bulkhead). These platforms are also crucial for supporting maintenance in the Wing & Engine Pylon section, providing necessary elevation for work on the Engine body, Inlet/Exhaust, and Hydraulics. Specialized access ensures workers can safely perform detailed inspections and repairs across the entire airframe, including the Tail Section elements like the Vertical and Horizontal Stabilizers.
