Mi-8VT Hip

The Mi-8VT Hip is part of the Mil Mi-8 family, one of the world’s most widely produced and versatile helicopters. Designed in the Soviet Union, the Mi-8 served primarily as a medium twin-turbine transport helicopter, though it has seen numerous armed and specialized variants globally.

The aircraft’s history traces back to the Mil design bureau, founded by Mikhail Mil. Mil became a foundational name in Soviet and Russian rotorcraft design. The Mi-8 made its first flight on June 9, 1961, with a prototype of the twin-engine configuration (NATO code “Hip-B”) flying on September 17, 1962. Production of the series commenced in 1965, establishing the Mi-8 as a workhorse known for its sturdy design and reliability across diverse operational environments.
