The Irkut MC-21 is a next-generation Russian narrow-body jet airliner, developed to compete in the highly contested medium-haul market. Manufacturer Irkut, part of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), is a leading aerospace entity known for its military and civil aircraft production. The MC-21 program began as a joint effort, with the MC-21-300 variant performing its maiden flight on May 28, 2017. Due to external constraints, the focus shifted to the MC-21-310 variant, powered by the domestic Aviadvigatel PD-14 engine, which first flew in December 2020. The aircraft is anticipated to enter commercial service in 2026.
