FI-156D

The FI-156D, an ambulance variant of the German Fieseler Fi 156 Storch, is known for its exceptional Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL) capabilities. This high-wing aircraft was originally designed in the 1930s, gaining fame for its stability and ability to operate from minimal space. The D variant was configured to carry a stretcher for casualty evacuation. It is powered by an Argus As10C-3 inverted V-8 air-cooled piston engine, delivering 240 hp. The aircraft’s foundational characteristics include a long wing span of 46 ft. 9 in. and a cruise speed of 81 mph.

SEDE MORANE – SAULNIER, a foundational French aerospace company, played a significant role in the aircraft’s legacy. Morane-Saulnier, established in 1911, built a reputation for innovative military and civilian aircraft throughout the early 20th century. During and after WWII, the company manufactured the Storch design under license, referring to its versions as the Morane-Saulnier MS.500 series (such as the MS.502). These licensed production aircraft ensured the enduring presence of this reliable design long after the war.

Maintaining the FI-156D requires versatile access to key areas. Elevated platforms and stands are necessary for methodical maintenance on the propeller, engine cowl, and wing sections. Due to its high-wing configuration and conventional landing gear, solutions providing stable access to the cockpit, main landing gear, and tail section (empennage) are indispensable for thorough inspections and service.
