CH-47

The CH-47 Chinook is a versatile, tandem-rotor, heavy-lift transport helicopter known globally for its distinctive design and capabilities. Originally designed by Vertol (later acquired by Boeing), the CH-47 has been a workhorse for military and civilian operators since its introduction in 1962, following its first flight in 1961. It is manufactured by Boeing Defense, Space & Security, a division of the major American aerospace company, Boeing, which has a long history of producing iconic aircraft.

Primarily used by the United States Army, the CH-47 Chinook serves crucial roles in troop transport (carrying up to 55 troops), resupply, and casualty evacuation, with a cargo capacity of up to 10 tonnes. Its twin rotors allow it to carry heavy payloads internally and externally, making it invaluable for missions requiring heavy-lift capabilities.

Common locations and primary users span across the globe, demonstrating its adaptability to diverse environments, including arctic, desert, and jungle operations. Key operators include the United States Army, the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, the Royal Saudi Air Force, and around 20 countries such as Canada, the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Italy, and Australia. A civilian variant, the Boeing Vertol 234, is also used for passenger and cargo transport, aerial firefighting, and supporting logging and oil-extraction industries. Over 1,200 units have been built since 1962.
