The CA-6 Wackett Trainer was the first aircraft designed internally by the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation (CAC) of Australia. Named after its designer, Lawrence Wackett, the CA-6 was a two-seat basic trainer aircraft. The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) was the primary user, receiving 200 units of the CA-6 variant, which followed two CA-2 prototypes. Production was introduced in March 1941, fulfilling a vital role during wartime training before the aircraft was largely retired by the RAAF after 1945.
Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation was foundational to the Australian aviation industry, established to domestically produce aircraft. Separately, an American company named Commonwealth Aircraft Co. was founded in 1942, but this entity went bankrupt in 1947 after resuming production of the Rearwin-designed Skyranger post-WWII.
