The MBB/Kawasaki BK 117 is a twin-engined medium utility–transport helicopter renowned for its versatility and robust design. It was jointly developed and manufactured by Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm (MBB) of Germany and Kawasaki Heavy Industries of Japan.
The history of the BK 117 began with a cooperative agreement signed in February 1977. The German prototype first flew in June 1979, followed by the Japanese prototype in August 1979. It entered service in December 1982. The joint development combined the independent rotorcraft efforts of the two manufacturers. While MBB eventually became part of Eurocopter (now Airbus Helicopters), Kawasaki continues to manufacture the aircraft in Japan.
The BK 117 is distinguished by its twin-engine reliability, wide cabin, and large rear clamshell doors, making it well-suited for multiple roles that require easy access and large cargo capacity.
Commonly used around the world, the BK 117 is frequently employed for demanding missions such as emergency medical services (EMS), search and rescue (SAR), law enforcement, and utility transport. Its robust design and twin-engine setup have made it a staple in challenging operational environments globally, serving both civilian and governmental roles, with primary users including organizations like DRF ADAC (Germany). Its popularity led to a refined derivative, the EC145/H145, which succeeded the original BK 117 in production.
