The Airbus A220 is a family of five-abreast narrow-body airliners, known for its efficiency and passenger comfort.
Originally developed by Bombardier as the CSeries (CS100 and CS300), the program was acquired by Airbus, which took a majority stake in July 2018, rebranding the aircraft as the A220. The aircraft is managed by Airbus Canada Limited Partnership (ACLP).
Manufactured in Canada, with a main final assembly line in Mirabel, Quebec, and a second line established in Mobile, Alabama, to serve the U.S. market, the A220 has been in service since 2016. It features state-of-the-art aerodynamics, advanced materials, and latest-generation engines, contributing to a 25% lower fuel burn per seat compared to previous-generation aircraft, and 50% lower noise levels. Its range supports transcontinental flights.
Airbus, the manufacturer, is one of the world’s leading aerospace companies, renowned for producing a wide range of commercial aircraft like the A320, A330, A350, and A380 families.
The A220 is primarily used by major airlines globally, including Delta Air Lines (North America, domestic/transcontinental routes), airBaltic (Europe, all-A220 fleet), Air France (Europe, medium-haul routes), and SWISS (Europe, Zurich to European cities). It is ideal for regional airports and urban operations due to its low noise footprint. It competes in the small airliner category, complementing the A319neo in the Airbus portfolio.
