212

The Bell 212, often referred to as the Twin Huey, is a medium utility helicopter originally developed by Bell Helicopter, with production starting in Fort Worth, Texas, and later moved to Mirabel, Quebec, Canada. Bell Helicopter is a prominent American manufacturer known for its rotorcraft, and the 212 model is an evolution of the widely successful Bell 205 (UH-1 Iroquois).

The Bell 212 was first flown in 1968 and was primarily developed for the Canadian Forces, who designated it as the Twin Huey. It was also adopted by the United States military as the UH-1N. A key feature of the 212 is its “TwinPac” powerplant, consisting of a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6T-3 or -3B coupled turboshaft engine, which provides enhanced performance and safety compared to its single-engine predecessor. Production of the Bell 212 was completed in 1998, but many remain in service worldwide.

The helicopter is marketed to civilian operators and can accommodate up to 14 passengers along with one pilot, or carry an external load of up to 5,000 lb (2,268 kg). Common locations and operators include civil utility roles, particularly in the oil industries, law enforcement, and search and rescue missions. Examples of prominent users include CHC Helicopter, the Canadian Coast Guard (former operator), and various military and government organizations in countries such as Canada, Colombia, Argentina, and Mexico. The aircraft is widely used globally for its reliability and versatility in transporting cargo and personnel, particularly in challenging environments like the Arctic, where Air Greenland has utilized it for resupply missions. The Bell 212 also served as the foundation for the development of the Bell 412, which features a composite four-blade main rotor.
