206

The Bell 206 is a family of two-bladed, single- or twin-engined utility helicopters, manufactured by Bell Helicopter, a company known for pioneering many successful commercial and military rotorcraft designs. The most common variant is the Bell 206 JetRanger, an iconic light helicopter celebrated for its sleek design, reliability, and versatility.

The aircraft traces its history back to the U.S. Army’s Light Observation Helicopter (LOH) program in the early 1960s. Although Bell did not win the military contract initially, they redesigned their LOH prototype into the successful commercial five-place Model 206A JetRanger, which first flew in 1966 and was certified in 1967. This design became a huge commercial success and paved the way for subsequent variants like the seven-place LongRanger.

The Bell 206 series is one of the most widely used helicopters globally. Its robust design and low operating costs make it ideal for a variety of missions. It is commonly utilized by law enforcement agencies, news media organizations for traffic reporting, air taxi and charter services, and for corporate transport. Due to its popularity and ease of maintenance, the JetRanger and LongRanger variants can be found operating in almost every corner of the world, from crowded urban centers in North America and Europe to remote locations in developing nations, serving roles in utility, observation, and emergency medical services (EMS).
