Chance Vought

Chance Vought Aircraft was founded in 1917 by Chance Milton Vought. Known for innovation in aviation, the company’s early success included the VE-7SF fighter, which made the first carrier take-off from the USS Langley in 1922. It was later reorganized as Chance Vought Corporation. Historical products include the O2U-1 Corsair and the F4U Corsair. Post-WWII, Vought developed early naval jets like the F6U Pirate and the F7U Cutlass. Although the company name has changed hands and merged over the decades (becoming part of United Aircraft and Transport Corporation, and later Ling-Temco-Vought), its legacy in military aviation is significant. As Vought Aircraft Industries, Inc., the company continued to contribute as a major subcontractor on programs like the Boeing 747, 757, and 767 airliners, as well as the Rockwell B-1 Bomber and the Northrop B-2 Stealth Bomber. The company’s work largely focused on military and commercial aerospace subcontracting in later years.
